Waist-to-height ratio: the simple health indicator
Updated on June 30, 2026 · by Rafael Rossi
The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) compares your waist to your height. It's simple, fast and a good sign of abdominal fat — the most concerning kind.
How to calculate
WHtR = waist ÷ height, same unit. Waist 80 cm and height 170 cm → 0.47.
The golden rule
Keep your waist below half your height (WHtR < 0.5). Above that, cardiometabolic risk rises.
Why it can beat BMI
BMI doesn't separate fat from muscle or say where the fat is. WHtR focuses on belly (visceral) fat, linked to type-2 diabetes and heart problems. Best to use both together.
How to measure the waist
Tape at navel height, relaxed, without holding your breath or tightening. Measure in the morning for consistency.
FAQ
What WHtR is ideal? Below 0.5 for adults. 0.5–0.6 warrants attention; above 0.6, elevated risk.
Does it work for children? The "waist < half height" rule works well for kids over 6 too — an advantage over child BMI.
