How the calculation works
GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average used at US universities, on a 0 to 4.0 scale. Each letter grade becomes points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0) and is weighted by the course credits:
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Step-by-step example
Course A (3 credits, A=4) and B (4 credits, B=3):
- Points: (4×3) + (3×4) = 24
- Credits: 7
- GPA: 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43
Examples
- All A grades: GPA 4.0 (the maximum).
- A (4 cr), C (2 cr): (16 + 4) ÷ 6 = 3.33.

A 3.5+ GPA is generally considered strong; 3.0 is solid.

Unweighted is a simple average; weighted accounts for credits (or difficulty). This calculator uses credits.
How to convert 0–10 grades to GPA?
There is no universal rule — each institution has its own table. Roughly, 9–10 ≈ A, 8 ≈ B, 7 ≈ C.
