Test grade calculator (score and percentage)
Find the percentage and letter grade of a test from the total questions and how many you missed.
The percentage is correct ÷ total × 100. The letter grade uses the common scale: A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, below that F.
How the calculation works
The percentage score is (correct ÷ total) × 100. On a 20-question test with 3 wrong, that's 17 correct → 85%. For a 0–10 score, divide the percentage by 10.
Examples
- 17 correct out of 20: 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85% (8.5 out of 10).
- 45 of 60: 75% → 7.5 out of 10.

What if questions have different weights?

How many correct answers for a target grade?
Multiply total questions by the target as a fraction. For 70% of 40: 0.70 × 40 = 28 correct.
Do blank questions count as wrong?
For the percentage correct, yes — only correct answers count. Tests with negative marking have their own rule.
How do I compute a grade with weighted questions?
Divide points earned by total points available, not the simple share of correct answers.
Should I guess when wrong answers are penalised?
Only if you can eliminate options. With a full penalty on five-option questions, blind guessing has negative expected value.
How should I manage exam time?
Allocate by point value, not question count, and answer what you know first.
