How to convert a fraction to a percentage
Updated on June 30, 2026 · by Rafael Rossi
A percentage is nothing but a fraction of 100. So converting any fraction to a percentage is quick and always follows the same path.
Two steps
- Divide the numerator by the denominator — you get a decimal.
- Multiply by 100 and add the % sign.
Step-by-step example
3/4 → 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 → 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
Likewise: 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5%; 2/5 = 0.4 = 40%.
The equivalence shortcut
If the denominator scales to 100 easily, use fraction equivalence: 3/20 = 15/100 = 15%. Faster than dividing.
Fractions greater than 1
An improper fraction gives over 100%: 5/4 = 1.25 = 125%.
FAQ
What if it repeats? Round the percentage: 1/3 = 0.333… ≈ 33.3%.
Back from percentage to fraction? Put it over 100 and simplify: 40% = 40/100 = 2/5.
