Interest rate converter (monthly ↔ annual)

Convert equivalent rates between day, month and year under compound interest. Example: 1% a month equals 12.68% a year — not the 12% you would expect.

%
Equivalent rate
12.6825% per year
Effective annual rate12.68%
Summary1% per month = 12.6825% per year

Uses equivalent (compound) rates, not the linear proportion. That is why 1%/month ≈ 12.68%/year, not 12%.

Guide How to convert interest rates (monthly ↔ annual)

How the calculation works

Two rates are equivalent when they yield exactly the same over the period. The classic mistake is multiplying or dividing by 12 — that gives the "nominal" rate, which ignores interest on interest.

The right path goes through the effective annual rate:

i_year = (1 + i)periods per year − 1

And back (annual → monthly) uses the root:

i_month = (1 + i_year)1/12 − 1

Step-by-step example

1%/month is not 12%/year:

  • (1.01)¹² − 1 = 12.68%/year

Why it matters

Comparing a "2%/month" loan with a "26%/year" one only works once both are on the same basis. (2%/mo = 26.8%/yr.)

Examples

  • 1%/mo → 12.68%/yr.
  • 12%/yr → 0.949%/mo (not 1%).

Frequently asked questions

Is 1%/month equal to 12%/year?

No. Because interest compounds, 1%/month equals 12.68%/year.

Nominal vs effective rate?

The nominal rate adds linearly; the effective rate accounts for compounding and reflects the real yield.

Does this work for Selic or CDI?

Yes. Annual benchmark rates need compound equivalence to become a monthly rate — dividing by 12 is wrong.
