Each shape uses only some fields (see the shape list). Enter measures in the same unit (cm) so the volume comes out in cm³ = milliliters.
How the calculation works
Volume measures the space a solid takes up, always in cubic units (cm³, m³). Each shape has its formula:
- Cube:
a³ - Box:
length · width · height - Cylinder:
π·r²·h - Sphere:
4/3·π·r³ - Cone:
1/3·π·r²·h - Pyramid:
(base area · height) / 3
Step-by-step example (cylinder)
Radius 5 cm, height 20 cm:
- Volume: π × 25 × 20 ≈ 1,571 cm³ ≈ 1.57 liters
Why cone and pyramid divide by 3
A cone fits exactly 3 times inside a cylinder of the same base and height — hence "÷ 3".
Handy: 1 cm³ = 1 milliliter, and 1,000 cm³ = 1 liter.
Examples
- Box 30 × 20 × 10 cm: 6,000 cm³ = 6 liters.
- Sphere of radius 3 cm: 4/3 × π × 27 ≈ 113 cm³.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert to liters?
Divide the cm³ volume by 1000. E.g., 3000 cm³ = 3 liters.
Volume vs capacity?
Volume is the space a solid occupies; capacity is how much it holds inside. For thin-walled containers, they nearly match.
How to find an irregular volume?
Split into known solids and add, or use water displacement (the submerged volume equals the object's).
