Data converter (bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB)

Convert bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB and TB (binary base).

Result
0.000977 GB
Equivalence1 MB = 0.000977 GB

How the calculation works

Digital data is measured in bytes and multiples. This calculator uses the binary base (factors of 1024), the same operating systems usually show.

Equivalences (binary base)

  • 1 byte = 8 bits
  • 1 KB = 1,024 bytes  ·  1 MB = 1,024 KB
  • 1 GB = 1,024 MB  ·  1 TB = 1,024 GB

Step-by-step example

How many MB in 2 GB? 2 × 1,024 = 2,048 MB.

Bit vs byte on the internet

Internet speed is in megabits per second (Mbps), but downloads show megabytes (MB). Since 1 byte = 8 bits, a 100 Mbps link downloads ~12.5 MB/s — divide speed by 8.

Examples

  • 1 GB = 1,024 MB = 1,048,576 KB.
  • 200 Mbps internet ≈ 25 MB/s download (200 ÷ 8).

Frequently asked questions

Difference between bit and byte?

1 byte = 8 bits. Network speed uses bits (Mbps); file size uses bytes (MB).

Why does my "1 TB" drive show less?

Makers use decimal (1 TB = 10¹² bytes), but the OS shows binary (1024), giving ~931 GB.

How long to download a file?

Divide size (in bits) by speed (in bits/s). Use the download-time calculator.
