How the calculation works
Converting length means multiplying or dividing by a fixed factor, since every unit measures the same thing (distance). Internally everything is taken to the meter, then to the target unit.
Equivalences that solve almost everything
- 1 km = 1,000 m · 1 m = 100 cm = 1,000 mm
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm (exact)
- 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm
- 1 yard = 3 feet = 0.9144 m
- 1 mile = 1.609 km · 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km
