Step-by-step example
Converting 175 cm to feet and inches:
- Total inches: 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.90 in
- Feet: whole part of 68.90 ÷ 12 = 5 ft
- Remaining inches: 68.90 − (5 × 12) = 8.90 in
Result: 5 ft 8.9 in, or 5'9" rounded.

The two-step rounding error
Rounding total inches before splitting off the feet changes the answer. 175 cm gives 68.90 inches; rounding to 69 before dividing produces 5 ft 9 in, which corresponds to 175.3 cm. The difference is small for height and meaningful anywhere 3 mm matters — so convert first and round only at the end.
