Losses cover the energy dissipated between the outlet and the battery. Public DC fast chargers usually cost 2–4× the home rate per kWh.

How the calculation works

The charge cost is battery (kWh) × rate × (1 + losses). Divided by the range, you get cost per km. E.g., a 50 kWh battery at $0.80/kWh with 10% losses = $44.00 per full charge; with 300 km of range, ~$0.15/km — typically 3–5× cheaper than gasoline.

  • Versus gasoline at R$0.55/km, the EV is ~3.7× cheaper per km.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare with a gas car?

Compare cost per km: for the EV it's this result; for gas, fuel price ÷ km per liter (see our fuel cost calculator).

Does charging 20%→80% change the cost?

Cost is proportional: 60% of the battery costs 60% of a full charge. The 20–80% window is for battery health, not price.

Charge at home or at a station?

Home is usually much cheaper (residential rate). Fast public stations charge more for convenience and speed.
