Hours worked calculator
Calculate hours worked from clock-in, clock-out and break — with optional pay.
If the end is earlier than the start, an overnight shift is assumed.
How the calculation works
The calculator finds how many hours you actually worked from your clock-in, clock-out and break (lunch):
hours worked = (end − start) − break
If the shift ends after midnight (overnight), we add 24h to the end time so it comes out right.
Step-by-step example
In at 08:00, out at 17:30, 1h break:
- Gross: 17:30 − 08:00 = 9h30
- Minus break: 9h30 − 1h00 = 8h30 worked
Why converting to minutes helps
Adding "broken" hours is confusing (8h45 + 0h30 isn't 8h75). The trick is converting to minutes, computing, then back — which the calculator does for you.
Examples
- In 09:00, out 18:00, 1h lunch: 8h worked.
- Night shift 22:00 → 06:00, 30 min break: 7h30.
Frequently asked questions
How is an overnight shift counted?
Just enter the end time normally (e.g. 22:00 to 06:00) — the calculation handles the day change.
Does it count overtime?
It shows the total worked. For overtime pay with the premium, use the overtime calculator.
How to turn 8h30 into decimal hours?
Divide minutes by 60: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, so 8h30 = 8.5 hours. Handy to multiply by an hourly rate.
