Pace per 100 m is the main reference in swimming. Recreational swimmers are around 2:00–2:30 /100m.

How the calculation works

Pace per 100 m is total time ÷ (distance ÷ 100). E.g., 1000 m in 18 min (1080 s) → 1080 ÷ 10 = 108 s = 1:48 per 100 m. Speed is distance ÷ time.

Examples

  • 1000 m in 18 min: 108 s per 100 m = 1:48/100m.
  • 400 m in 8 min: 2:00 per 100 m.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good swim pace?

It varies a lot. Beginners: ~2:30/100m; intermediate: ~2:00; trained swimmers: under 1:30.

Why is swim pace per 100 m?

Because pools and races are multiples of 50/100 m — "per 100 m" is the universal standard.

How to improve pace?

Technique (fewer strokes per lap) usually beats just swimming harder. Work efficiency before power.
