Steps to km calculator (and calories)
Convert steps into distance and calories, using your height to estimate stride length.
Stride is estimated as height × 0.415 (≈ 71 cm for 1.70 m). Calories and distance vary with pace, terrain and actual stride.
How the calculation works
Distance is steps × stride length. Average stride is about height × 0.415. So 10,000 steps for a 1.70 m person is ~7.1 km. Calories use ~0.04 kcal per step, adjusted for weight.
Examples
- 10,000 steps for a 1.70 m person: ~7.1 km.
- A 0.75 m stride: 1 km ≈ 1,333 steps.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in 1 km?
About 1,300 to 1,500 steps, depending on height and stride length.
Is the 10,000-step goal mandatory?
No — it came from a 1960s marketing campaign. Studies show benefits from ~7,000 steps/day.
How to measure my exact stride?
Walk 10 meters counting steps and divide: 10 ÷ steps = stride length.
