How the calculation works

Exact age is the time between the date of birth and a reference date (today by default), expressed in full years plus the remaining months and days.

How the count works

It counts whole years elapsed; then, from the last birthday to the reference date, the full months and finally the remaining days. It follows the real calendar: months of 28–31 days, and it accounts for leap years.

So age is not simply "days ÷ 365" — that shortcut drifts by a few days over a lifetime because of Feb 29.

Example

Born 01/01/2000, on 13/07/2026: 26 years, 6 months and 12 days.

What it's for

  • Exact age for documents and forms.
  • The age someone had (or will have) on a specific date — just change the reference date.
  • Checking minimum age for exams, retirement or enrollment at a cut-off date.

Examples

  • Born 15/03/1990, today: age in full years, months and days.
  • Age on a future date: set the "reference date" to, e.g., Dec 31 next year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compute age on a past date?

Yes. Just change the "reference date" to the date you want.

Why not just divide days by 365?

Because some years have 366 days (leap years). Dividing by 365 accumulates error and can be off by a day or more.

When do people born on Feb 29 celebrate?

In non-leap years, either Feb 28 or Mar 1 is used by convention. For full-year age, the effect is at most one day.
